Guest post at Revonte.com

Briefly: Recently, I’ve been helping the Revonte folks with their e-bike drivetrain design and optimization. The nicely-integrated system features a continuously variable (CVT) transmission with some surprising benefits. There’s the obvious aspect of always having the right gear for the occasion. Furthermore, it can be made quite robust indeed, using only components that have stood the test of time. Compare this to a standard bicycle cogset, where the smallest gear wears out and can require changing as often as every 500 km for some cyclists (something I recently learned). This post explores some of the features of CVT systems, as well as the challenges they place on optimization.
