Having a small writer’s block today, so let’s not bother ourselves (read: me) with any preamble. Straight to business it is. Yesterday, I acted on a whim and developed an awesome recipe: protein coffee. Here goes:
Protein coffee
- Fill a fitness shaker with water.
- Add a scoop of chocolate-flavoured whey protein.
- Add a teaspoon of instant coffee powder.
- Shake (and not stir) to perfection.
- Optional: also add some sweetener for extra decadence, or maybe some ice cubes for hot weather.
- Enjoy.
Simple as that. The end result looks exactly as unappetizing as protein shakes generally do, so I’m not posting a picture. Instead, enjoy a pic of the brand of instant coffee I used:
That’s the Finnish-market version of Nescafe Gold, I’d wager. Not very good as far as coffee goes, but instant coffee never is. Definitely the best in that category though, of the ones I have tasted.
And no, this is definitely not affiliate marketing. See the links to the online store? Neither do I.
Although it would be nice if coffee companies realized what a huge market we researchers are.
Anyway, back to the point. The protein coffee actually tastes quite good. I’d even say very good indeed.
Now, I’m no fan of fitness-ing my life to an extreme degree. Rarely if ever will you find me baking high-protein pretend-cupcakes or whatever. I like my desserts to remain desserts. Savoury high in fat and sugar. Extravagantly so in calories.
Nor I am saying that this thing here is an improvement to your normal coffee. It isn’t.
However, I would say it’s a really good-tasting way to make your protein shake resemble coffee. And – but I haven’t tested this yet personally, so maintain healthy scepticism – it would probably work as an iced coffee as well.
And it definitely beats bulletproof coffee.
Mainly by having the characteristic of not being freaking detarded.
But please, just please don’t go and proteinize your each cup of coffee. Given how “well” most protein powders and coffee agree with people’s stomachs, and how neither instant coffee nor protein powder are exactly cheap, you would probably only be pissing money out of your butt.
Now how’s that for a mental image?
Cake
Now that we’re properly started with desserts and other sweet-stuff, let us not stop. Behold the gloriousness below.
That’s cake.
Cake.
Cake always makes me go caaaaake. Think Homer Simpson and doughnuuuuts, only with cake.
To be exact, that’s a cream cake with Finnish raspberries, lingonberries, blueberries, and redcurrant. I was lazy and bought the base pre-cooked. How easy is life today.
The cake is actually there for a purpose. I recently got a 5000 Euro grant from Tekniikan edistämissäätiö. Loosely translated, that’s the Finnish Foundation for the Advancement of Technology. So congrats me!
Anyway, it is customary in my research group to celebrate most occasions with cake. And this definitely counts as an occasion. Therefore, cake it is.
